Computer Engineering Degrees

Computer Engineering is a curriculum dedicated to the design and development of computer hardware components and the software that affects these components. It was originally categorized under electrical engineering, however, its scope has extended beyond traditional electrical engineering, and it now includes some aspects of computer science. The courses can be divided further into several concentrations.

Types of Computer Engineering Degrees

Computer Systems Architecture

This branch is concerned with the development of various computer components, and how they operate as a system.

Signal, Image and Speech Processing

This focuses on the evaluation of both analog and digital transmissions. This also includes the filtering and analysis of data.

Logic Formulation

This study focuses on how computer systems work on a binary system and definite rules of logic. The computer components work based on their basic building blocks called the logic gates.

Embedded Systems

This is the development of embedded systems that are contained in electronic gadgets. These are independent computer systems designed to perform a definite purpose.

Interface Design

This study focuses on the development of interface methods to improve human’s interaction with the computers. These can include keyboards, mouse, touch screen, voice recognition and other peripherals.

Operating Systems

This branch is concerned with the development of operating systems which plays an integral part in the operation of a computer. Without it, the hardware component will be basically useless.

Software Engineering

This study focuses on the development of compatible software to match the hardware component.
Coding, Cryptography and Information Protection
This study is focused on the development of various protection mechanisms to control data tampering.

Multimedia Computing

This is focused on the compression and decompression of text, music, speech, image and video into a comprehensible data, including the proper management, coding-decoding methods and proper display.

Computer Assisted Design

The design and development of new hardware components using a computer software.

Computer Organization

This is the study that focuses on the computer’s functionality half-way between digital logic and operating system levels.

Digital Systems

This is the study of the operational levels of a digital computer. It encompasses the study of the mechanical parts, logical elements and functional units.

Electromechanics

The study of a mechanical device that is operated electronically.
Computational Science and Engineering
This is focused on the formulation of methods to solve complicated mathematical problems.

Networks

This study is focused on the design and implementation of local and wide area networks, in a much general sense.

Communications and Wireless Networks

This branch is concerned with the design and development of communications over wireless networks, including transmission and security protocols.
VLSI systems (very large scale integrated circuits)
The design and development of tools and properties for miniaturized electronic devices.

Computer Vision and Robotics

The development of visual sensor technology to give a better analysis than an individual view. Robotics is focused on the design and development of robots.
With the continuous development of technology, one need not wonder if there will be some additions to these already long list on the fields of computer engineering. The numerous possibilities that one can do with a computer has made it necessary to divide it on a relatively small, but complicated aspects.
